Bucky's missing.
In his apartment, Sam finds his arm, his phone, his dog tags, and a really angry three-legged cat.
The perfect man if what a person wanted was a three inch, chocolate, hanging ornament. Bucky twisted the box in his hands again, angling until he could read the words again. He’s sweet and decadently rich! Bucky snorted, he got by just fine, no need for riches he just wanted someone kind. Meet me under the mistletoe! He'd never tell anyone besides Natasha who had caught him in the act one year, but he loved those over the top holiday movies. He couldn't help wishing he'd end up in some ridiculous meet-cute and the hard work of finding someone wouldn't be his problem. He doubted it was in the cards for him, no one had even tried to set him up this year, they must have given up too.
“Happy Saturnalia to us,” he said, kissing Alpine’s head and taking the cat with him to bed. “You’re an okay cat for company, but I wish I really could find the perfect man.”
The Soldier has been on the run ever since he escaped on mission, never staying long in one place. Sam Wilson changes that. Can he really have a life, be free, or will old ghosts come back to haunt him?
Bucky is in the middle of cutting out leaf shapes to stick on the top of his apple pie crust when, through his kitchen window, he sees an angel tumble down from the clouds.
It’s a gray skies kind of evening out in the country, with heavy rainclouds rolling in menacingly, so Bucky’s first thought when he watches a sizeable dark shadow slam right into the corn fields beside his house isn’t oh god, what was that? but rather oh god, is my house gonna be okay? I just bought the thing. But it’s definitely his second thought right afterward.
There’s absolutely nothing in the wake of the fall — no mushroom cloud of dust or dirt or ears of corn. He doesn’t think angel, initially. Obviously.
It’s probably some plane debris that thankfully fell a good few hundred meters from his roof; still, Bucky can’t help but spiral a little as he leans on the granite counter to get a better look out into the dim fog.
"Hours later, when everything was well and truly fucked, Bucky would recognize the exact moment when he should have benched himself. It had happened in the dazed split-second between Sam flashing him a smile as he swan-dived out of the plane and Bucky almost leaping right after him, his parachute lying forgotten on the floor."
When Sam gets caught in a memory machine, Bucky goes in after him.
“The first thing Sam thought when he woke up bathed in a one-inch sea of water and a soft haze of orange light was: I don’t have time for this shit.”
Or, Sam and Bucky find each other in the Soul World, and it's impossibly dull - until it's not.
Thomas is waiting for James to turn around again, and when he does, Thomas holds the wooden spoon up to James’ lips and lets him taste the pasta sauce.
Something twists inside of Bucky. This is so softly domestic; for a moment it feels as though he’s looking at something he shouldn’t, something far too intimate and sweet for his eyes. But it is him. Those are his eyes, so he doesn’t understand this nagging urge to stop intruding until it’s too late.
“Oh,” Sam says, “Oh, wait, they’re—”
And then James leans down and kisses Thomas square on the mouth.
“You were saying?” He chokes out, staring ahead.
From the corner of his eye, he sees Sam nodding, “They’re uh… together. That’s a thing.”
OR Sam and Bucky are tasked with spying on themselves from another timeline and learn a few things.
“Um.” Bucky sends an apologetic look to Sam’s direction. “I think getting stabbed by a magic knife may have given me some, uh, telepathic side effects.”
(or, there's some weird stuff going on, like a glowing knife and a crazy scientist and bucky's sudden ability to read sam's mind.)
This is a story about loss, bisexuality and commitment.
It’s also a story about Sam, his issues and the (imperfect) relationships that make up his life.
