Sam attends the local university. When Gabe's cousin comes to live with him while starting grad school at Sam's university, Dean thinks for sure that all his negative karma's coming to bite him in the ass because Cas clearly has a thing for Sam. No one would ever choose him over Sam. That's just logic.
Castiel Novak had hoped that college would be a new start, that the invisibility he’d suffered in high school would magically go away, but that hadn’t happened. Instead he was still the same socially awkward loner with few friends. When a gorgeous guy started sitting next to him in General Psych, Cas suffered his crush in silence. Dean's life at twenty-four makes him feel like he's forty—he works two jobs to help pay bills for his house and put his genius little brother through private school, and has spent six years (on and off, let's be honest) working on his mechanical engineering degree at KU. With so much of his life devoted to his family, Dean has little time in his schedule for class and no time for social interaction. Then, while getting his classes together for the fall, he finds himself in a do-or-die situation: He must take his last literature class now, his spring already filled with those left for his major...except that none of the English classes will fit his schedule. This is how Dean grovels and begs Dr. Castiel Milton to make a special arrangement for him, and Dr. Milton does.
Dean's got a crush on this freshman, Cas. He's working his way steadily along to asking him out, and then he finds out Cas is going on a goddamn date. Safe to say, he's not letting Cas go that easy.
Sam leaves Dean's laptop logged in to some app called "TutorMate" and Dean meets his brother's tutor. Cas helps him with his own work and they strike up a friendship. Before long Dean finds himself growing attached to the cute, clever Cas and flirtatiously suggests they go on a date if he applies himself to his college work. Cas agrees, but Dean discovers his online friend is not quite what he expected. (Or, in which Dean thinks he's met a cute girl and finds out he's actually met a cute boy.)
Dean and Gabriel have been involved in a major prank war since childhood. This year, Dean may or may not be off his game, but no matter what anyone says, it's not because of his crush on stunning history major, Castiel. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot. As if he didn't have enough to contend with, Gabriel's interest in his brother is seriously starting to piss him off.

You're born with your soulmate's last name on your wrist. All his life, Castiel's waited to finally get to meet his Winchester soulmate. So when he starts college and meets Sam with the name Novak on his wrist, it seems like a no brainer. Even if all Castiel ever feels towards Sam is friendship. The soulmate marks are never wrong, after all, so maybe they should just try harder.

Starting his second year of college, Castiel is tired of being alone, and makes a conscious attempt at making friends. It's just as hard as he thought it would be. Although, almost all of his hardships seem to be related to one Dean Winchester.
