Bilbo's door gets jammed one day. Luckily, a company of dwarves just so happened to have set up shop in front of the old smithy.
Thorin temporarily settles in the Shire to work as a blacksmith. There he meets Bilbo, a middle-aged bachelor who insists on over-paying (“tipping,” according to the insufferable halfling) for his work.
Throughout the quest to reclaim Erebor, Bilbo learned to deal with the many vexing behaviours of the Dwarves. One thing he could never adapt to, however, was their belief in superstition.
Being the only hobbit under the Lonely Mountain was fine until Bilbo realized it's been months since he felt grass under his feet. When he goes looking for sunshine, Thorin assumes the worst, and the Company is tired of putting up with their King and Burglar being oblivious idiots. Miscommunication and stargazing ensue!
"Even the smallest person can change the course of the future." – Galadriel; In an attempt to get the Arkenstone back for Thorin, Bilbo discovers the ring he's been using is the One Ring. Seized by a need to destroy gold, especially gold with the ability to ensnare creature and king alike, he sets out alone for Mordor. Anything to forget about the love that gold cost him. What he doesn't know is that Thorin is no longer under the thrall of gold, and is desperately racing to catch up with him to keep him safe. They may have just started on another adventure, but this one may not end as well as their first quest.
Thorin is unlikely to marry a dwarven princess now that Erebor is reclaimed, but that's because it's very unusual for a Crafter such as him to marry anyone at all. This causes Bilbo considerable consternation, for reasons he would rather not name.
Bilbo didn’t mean to do this. Well, of course he didn’t. This isn’t his fault. One moment he was sitting in front of the fire where they were camped in the forest at the edge of The Lonely Mountain, clicking his tongue at Fili and Kili chucking bits of bread at Balin, the next they were under attack. It all happened so fast, Azog and his Orcs embarking on a brutal slaughter before they had the chance to raise a sword in defence, and Bilbo somehow managed to claw his way through the forest and to the foot of the Lonely Mountain where he comes face-to-face with… Thorin… who Bilbo was certain just had his head chopped off a moment ago. To make matters worse, he doesn’t seem to recognise him. And Erebor is… well, not a charred and blackened empty tomb inhabited by a dragon. And yeah, Bilbo’s fairly certain this isn’t going to end well.
“It seems that your bravery has done the impossible and sparked a truce between us and the Elves, fragile as it may be.” At this, the Dwarf king smiled wryly. Who would have thought that a soft Hobbit would have so much sway over the two most powerful figures in this region? Bilbo Baggins did not respond. He had remained deeply unconscious for the past seven days. Thorin Oakenshield tried not to let his heart break. An AU retelling of the events before, during, and after the Battle, but not necessarily in that order.
A group of starving, destitute dwarves moves into the abandoned smithy. A bored, lonely--and frankly, nosy--Bilbo just wants to help. What he gets is a whole lot more.
Bilbo tries his hand at match-making. What he doesn't expect is to find his perfect match in the process...
